What does Prison Calls Do?
Prison Calls reduces the call cost from a UK prison to your mobile. This means that instead of a prisoner being charged the mobile rate for a call, they will only be charged the cost of calling a landline rate.
This helps the prisoners keep in touch with you by making their phone credit go further meaning you have more talk time on the phone. Rather than waiting by a landline all day to receive a call from your loved one, you can now be mobile and still speak to your loved one.
Is Prison Calls associated with the HMP Prison Service?
Prison Calls is not associated with the HMP Prison Service. We are a private limited company.
How does It work?
A dedicated landline is assigned to your mobile phone number. Once live a Prisoner can then contact you on your mobile by calling the landline number we provide and you pass on to the prisoner.
Why do you need a landline number?
Calls to landline numbers are cheaper than calls to a mobile. Estimates suggest that to call a mobile from inside a prison can cost as much as 50p + per minute (this can increase depending on what time of day you call). However, to call a landline, calls can cost as little as 10p a minute.
What will the prisoner be charged once using PrisonCalls Service?
When the prisoner calls your mobile using the landline number we provided, they will be charged the landline rate from 1.9p per minute regardless of calling your mobile. As this cost so little, the prisoner’s phone credit will last much longer than if they were to call a mobile directly.
Do we still pay in prison?
Using our service reduces the cost of calling mobiles. You still have to purchase credit, you can either spend less on credit or more talk time for your money. The credit can be given to them from loved ones or they can earn this themselves whilst inside.
How long does it take for numbers to be activated?
You will receive an email to let you know your designated number/s are live and ready to use. This can take up to 24 hours during a working week. You then provide the numbers to your love for the prison to update the prisoner's friends and family call list.
What happens if I move to another Prison?
The numbers stay with you, so you can, therefore, take these to a different prison. The number is your friends or family members and will be theirs for as long as they have a PrisonCall membership.
Am I breaking any rules or regulations?
No. PrisonCalls telephone numbers are connected to one allocated destination. This is the same as BT connecting to your home address. This confirms with NOMs guidelines and the service does not pose a security risk to the prison service and does not affect the way the prison conducts the security checks by monitoring or recording calls. All prison services carry out their rules and regulation as per normal.
